GOT QUESTIONS? WE HAVE ANSWERS.

Everything you need to know about how Wordrop works, what's included, and how to get started.

What is Wordrop?+

Wordrop is a macOS menu-bar app that teaches you vocabulary using SM-2 spaced repetition and active recall. It drops 30-second quizzes into your day at scientifically-calculated intervals — so you build lasting vocabulary without blocking extra study time.

How does spaced repetition work in Wordrop?+

Wordrop uses the SM-2 algorithm — the same system behind Anki and Memrise. After each quiz, you rate your confidence (Again, Hard, Good, or Easy). That rating determines when Wordrop will show you the word again. Words you find easy reappear after longer gaps; words you struggle with come back sooner. Once a word's review interval reaches 21 days, it's marked Mastered — meaning it's in your long-term memory, not just short-term recall.

Which languages does Wordrop support?+

Wordrop supports any language pair you choose. You create word lists manually or import them via CSV with your source and target language columns. There are no hard-coded language restrictions — if you can type the words, Wordrop can quiz you on them.

What platforms does Wordrop run on?+

Wordrop is currently a native macOS application requiring macOS 13 (Ventura) or later. A Windows and mobile version are on the roadmap. Sign up for the beta to be notified when new platforms launch.

How is Wordrop different from Anki or Duolingo?+

Anki is powerful but passive — it only works when you open it. Duolingo gamifies language learning but uses massed practice sessions that don't fit into a workday. Wordrop is different: it lives in your menu bar and surfaces quizzes automatically at the right moment, without you having to remember to open anything. You use your own word lists (great for exam prep, professional vocabulary, or any language), and the SM-2 algorithm handles the scheduling invisibly in the background.

What is Reverse Recall?+

Reverse Recall is a learning mode in Wordrop that flips the quiz direction. Instead of seeing your native-language prompt and typing the target-language word, you see the target-language word and type the translation. This doubles your exposure per word and significantly improves retention by strengthening both directions of the memory trace.

Can I import my own word lists?+

Yes. Wordrop supports CSV import. Prepare a spreadsheet with your word pairs and import it directly. Wordrop slots each word into your frequency-ranked review queue. You can also add words manually one at a time.

What does the Daily Streak track?+

Your streak increases only when you hit your daily word-review target — not just when you open the app. This is intentional: Wordrop tracks honest progress, not vanity metrics. Miss your target and the streak resets.

Is Wordrop free?+

Wordrop has a free Squire tier that includes core learning modes, spaced repetition, daily streak tracking, and up to 5 custom word zones. The Dungeon Master tier ($6.99/mo) unlocks unlimited zones, advanced retention analytics, bulk CSV import, custom offline voice packs, and priority support.

How do I join the beta?+

Click 'Join the Beta' on the homepage and register your email. Beta invites are sent weekly in batches. You'll receive an email with your download link and activation code when your spot is ready.

How does Wordrop protect my data and privacy?+

Your word lists and review history are stored locally on your Mac. Wordrop does not sell your data or share it with third parties. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
